The cabernet sauvignon grapes were hand harvested in 1â„2 ton bins then destemmed and crushed into small stainless steel fermenters. The must was chilled to 55 degrees for 24 hours for its "cold soak" to enhance the berry aromas, and the juice was bled from the tank to concentrate flavors. During fermentation, we pumped over the wine twice a day to enhance color stability and aromas. 10% of the crushed fruit was fermented in French oak barrels to further intensify color and flavor. Both lots were pressed off at dryness then aged 22 months in French, Hungarian and American oak barrels. The final blend contains 25% merlot to enhance smoothness and increase the velvety structure.

A warm spring and summer with no heat spikes produced an early vintage and we were blessed with no significant rain at harvest. There was little to no disease pressure and alcohol levels remained moderate allowing for flourishing intense flavors. In the end, we think this will go down as a great year for Washington wine.

"The 2013 Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard is pure class. Rich, seamless and inviting, yet with vibrant beams of salinity and tannin beneath, the 2013 stands out because of its impeccable balance. Nothing is out of place. Cool-climate peppery, gamy notes add an attractive upper-register. Lavender, violets and inky blue/purplish fruit are infused into the layered, vivid finish. With time in the glass, the 2013 develops a super-appealing feel of vertical structure. The 2013 is very young. It is also very beautiful." 95 Vinous A.Galloni

smoky black tea like aromas, plum and ripe strawberry are most evident fruit aromas. The textures on the palate are perfectly resolved at this point very plush and soft. With great length and finesse. "Bright ruby-red. Exotic, flamboyantly perfumed dark berry aromas are complemented by floral, Asian spice and pungent herb accents. Ripe but energetic dark berry and cherry preserve flavors show a sexy vanillin oak influence but possess the concentration to handle it. Finishes smoky and long, with supple tannins and a touch of bitter cherry." - Josh Raynolds/Tanzer
The grapes for Meritage are hand-harvested and sorted then gravity fed to tank where it undergoes a cold maceration for 4-5 days. The grapes are then fermented entirely in stainless tanks at no more than 81° F. After alcoholic fermentation, an extended post maceration allows for additional body and structure. Afterwards, malolactic fermentation in barrel softens the wine by removing malic acid. The resulting wines are aged in French oak barrels for 9 months before blending and bottling.
