A warm summer, sunny and mild, boded well as grapes matured along a normal ripening curve. We were lucky and picked our grapes early before the rains and cool temperatures lingered. Thus we benefited from an idyllic summer, fully ripening without high sugar levels, making delicious and generous wines.

It was our warmest vintage since 2003 and we were happy that it cooled off just in time for harvest. Our growers let canopies spread a bit more than usual to maintain moderate alcohol levels, ripe flavors and vivid acidity. The fruit produced bold chardonnays, classic Bordeaux varietals and the big Italian varietals we have become accustomed to.

North of Ukiah, a rare white deer herd wanders through the hills near the southwest facing foothill vineyard that grew this Cabernet Sauvignon. This full-flavored wine shows the intensity of its red soil roots. It is ripe and plummy, with intriguing notes of anise and brown spice, and the structure to age five years or more from the vintage. This wine is the unique expression of a carefully nurtured piece of land, made manifest in each bottle. We do without conventional pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, treating the soil as a living, lifegiving system. Our winegrowing practices create special wines, while sustaining our environment, the place where we live, and the people who live here.

Manufacturer: Dry Creek Vineyard
Brand: Dry Creek Vineyard
From early winter through harvest, conditions could not have been more perfect. Late winter rains came at an excellent time and before the dormant vines awoke. Through spring and bud break, the weather cooperated and frost was of little or no concern. The summer growing season was outstanding with moderate temperatures that paved the way for a huge set in the vineyard. Harvest conditions were superb with rain staying away. Yields proved to be 20% over initial estimates and the 2012 vintage will go down as one of the finest in recent history.
